The Day They Value Art… I’m Leaving
“The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities announced a new Turnaround Arts initiative as a pilot project for eight schools with officials from the White House and U.S. Department of Education. Organizers said they aim to demonstrate research that shows the arts can help reduce behavioral problems and increase student attendance, engagement and academic success.” ~ Associated Press
People have been asking me:
“You’re an artist and teacher… aren’t you excited that the Obama administration is doing this?”
“One day a countryman going to the nest of his Goose found there an egg all yellow and glittering.”
I tell people (in jest):
“The day parents, administrators, heads of business, and government value Art enough to start funding it, I’m leaving.
“When he took it up it was as heavy as lead and he was going to throw it away, because he thought a trick had been played upon him.”
The day they start valuing Art like Math, Science, and Reading, I’m leaving.
But he took it home on second thought, and soon found to his delight that it was an egg of pure gold.
The day they start assessing Art on a state test, I’m leaving.

The day they start assessing Art teachers based on those tests, I’m leaving.
It is a dark day when Americans start to value something. All the fear, all the control, all the invested money and power make people start doing violence to what they value.
As he grew rich he grew greedy; and thinking to get at once all the gold the Goose could give, he killed it and opened it only to find nothing.
